Find Your Voice & Inspire Others To Find Theirs: Habit #8

Wait. How can the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey have eight habits? Well, consider the 8th Habit, Find Your Voice & Inspire Others to Find Theirs, a way to project what we learn with the other habits at tuition-free Dr. Joseph F. Pollack Academic Center for Excellence (Pace Academy).

Outside PACE Academy, two students walk together smiling on a sidewalk near the colorful playground while another follows right behind.

You Have Something to Say

PACE Academy, a tuition-free K-8 in Southfield, Michigan uses the Leader in Me program to teach the 7 Habits. This leadership curriculum includes the additional 8th habit to help students implement their newly developed leadership skills. Our small, engaged school explains that leaders find their voice by applying their talents, strengths and passions. Not only do we exercise our individual gifts, but we use them to lift and help others.

Using the 7 Habits, at our tuition-free K-8 public school we learn independence but also interdependence. Interdependence means we realize we are stronger together than apart.

Independence is promoted in the first three habits:

-Be Proactive

-Begin with the End in Mind

-Put First Things First

Interdependence is highlighted in the next three habits:

-Think Win-Win

-Seek First to Understand, Then Be Understood

-Synergize

And finally, self-care, always important, is the goal of the last habit:

-Sharpen the Saw

Learning how we can use our voices to help others means we use our independent talents to benefit the group and make us all stronger.

Using Your Voice at PACE Academy

How do scholars find their voice at PACE Academy? We start off every day with our TRIBES advisory where we learn and discuss social emotional learning. Sure, our great teachers start an engaging conversation, but they leave room for scholars to use their talents and abilities to grow their leadership skills and work together. Scholars share what they learn in monthly school assemblies, creating a bigger interdependence than just their classroom.

Sharing your voice isn’t confined to the beginning of the school day. Scholars are encouraged to assert themselves throughout the day, whether it’s in a STEM class, at lunch, working in our garden, participating in an after-school activity or at home! Go Warrior leaders!

It’s not too late to join us and enroll your K-8 child for free at PACE Academy today!
