PACE Academy Habit #6: Let’s Get Synergized

Synergy: Together is better.

At tuition-free Dr. Joseph F. Pollack Academic Center for Excellence (PACE Academy), we take time every day learning the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. Our K-8 in Southfield, Michigan teaches leadership through these powerful habits. Here, we focus on synergy!

PACE Academy scholars link paper strips into circles at a long table in the school hallway.

What is Synergy?

One of the reasons we love creating community at Pace Academy is for the synergy! You come to our Math Festival and not only see what our scholars are learning, but you also get to connect with teachers, administration, and other families. You might mention a summer camp that your child is excited about and the person you’re talking to gets excited because they’ve never heard of it but their child would love to go. They share a shortcut to get to the camp that you didn’t know about but will save you ten minutes in the car. Then another person mentions an early discount coupon code that they found for the camp and where to get cheap aquatic shoes you’ll need because of course kids’ feet always seem to grow two sizes during the summer. That’s synergy in action.

At our small, engaged school, Habit #6, synergize, is all about creative cooperation. Through the process of bringing a variety of ideas, solutions and components to the table, something larger than the sum of the individual parts can be created. Synergy celebrates teamwork, creativity, diversity and being open-minded to new ways of doing things because it’s about making something better than we could achieve individually.

Learning From One Another

PACE Academy is greater than the sum of all of our parts (staff, students and families) because we value the unique talents and skills each person brings to our school. The unity of our community creates a school environment that cannot be replicated!

The work we do at PACE Academy through our Leader in Me program to teach teamwork, cooperation and problem solving flows directly into the habit of synergy. From classroom discussions to big group projects, our learning is made richer because of the unique skills and talents each person brings. When we listen and share, we can gain new insights, look more deeply at issues and stretch our thinking. Our diversity strengthens our learning and creativity!
