5 Big Reasons to Love a Small School

Dr. Joseph F. Pollack Academic Center for Excellence (PACE Academy), may be small in size, but our offerings and benefits are anything but. Our size is precisely what allows us to offer tuition-free academics, support that fits the individual, and a community that cares. Here are five big benefits you can expect when your child attends our tuition-free Southfield, Michigan elementary school. Even better- it’s not too late to enroll. Don’t settle for anything less than the best for your child’s education.

PACE Academy students line up in a large gym space while waiting for a teacher to throw them a basketball.

1. Everyone Knows Your Name

At PACE Academy, no child slips through the cracks. Their social and emotional needs are known by all staff and the characteristics that make them special are appreciated. Our scholars know each other well, too: our small school K-8 model enables students to spend years together, developing close friendships and sharing developmental stages and milestones.

2. Customized Support

Our smaller student base enables our teachers to understand the academic struggles and strengths of their students, and they have the time to creatively respond with opportunities for enrichment or support. We love data and keeping track of how our scholars are doing, especially when it comes to foundational skills such as reading. We want to step in before a scholar gets behind. We have a Family & Student Support Coordinator, behavior interventionists, social workers, paraprofessionals, and counselors here to support our families.

3. High-Quality Education

With the amount of care and quality we give each of our scholars, it’s hard to believe that PACE Academy is a free public school, but we are! Besides strong academics, we offer a Strings Program, STEM classes, Art, a spelling bee, the Julia Robinson Math Festival (JRMF), field trips, and gardening.

4. Social Emotional Learning Focus

School is more than the ABC’s. We start our day with thirty minutes of TRIBES Advisory: a time to focus on social emotional learning. We begin with our school’s affirmation and move on to learning the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People® by Stephen Covey, a monthly character focus, our three Success Tenets or something topical that day. Feelings matter and we’re here for all of them.

5. Our Families

PACE Academy parents love the high level of partnership they experience with our teachers and staff to support student learning. There is frequent communication between teachers and parents about student performance, and parent help is welcomed. At PACE Academy there are many ways families can get involved: join our School Improvement Team program, spend time with other PACE families at the annual Kalahari Retreat or volunteer in the classroom. We value and welcome close relationships with our students’ families.

We are still enrolling at our small and secure K-8– it’s not too late! Join our tuition-free PACE Academy Warrior family.
