Parents As Partners

At Dr. Joseph F. Pollack Academic Center of Excellence (PACE Academy), a public K-8 elementary school in Southfield, Michigan, community is everything.  Parents and loving caregivers are our true partners in our success as a close-knit tuition-free school.  They are with us  – every step of the way –  as we shape and create bright futures with and for our amazing scholars. At PACE Academy, we are proud to include our scholars’ WHOLE community, whoever that is, because every valued connection promotes learning and growth.

Connecting our Community

At PACE Academy, we believe in community and connection, and family is a big part of that. Whether you give rides to school, act as your student’s #1 cheerleader, or ask the dreaded, “Got your homework done?”, these connections are important.

Right from the get-go, parents are involved at PACE Academy. Before your child even comes to school we schedule an orientation for your family to meet us so we can go over expectations together. Along with introducing you to our school, we want you to know how important your role is in your scholar’s education and how you can be involved.

Parents and caregivers can check-in with PACE Academy in many ways. We have a dedicated Family and Support Specialist ready to help. She sends out a parent newsletter on the regular, keeping you up-to-date on our activities and learning. Our teachers are here to discuss your scholar’s progress and encourage you to reach out. Online, our engaged school dedicates a section just for parents. It includes parent resources for PACE and in the community. You can also check out our PowerSchool portal, a tool we use to personalize our students’ K-8 experience. It tracks not only details such as attendance, but class grades and assignments, too. We love sharing!

Students and parents connect as well through our Code of Conduct. This handbook sets clear guidelines for the group effort of caregivers, students, and PACE Academy staff. For example, PACE Academy agrees to provide a high-quality curriculum and instruction, parents agree to support this, and students agree to produce high quality work. Win-win-win!

Parents as Examples

We offer many ways for parents to get involved at PACE Academy. Want to steer our curriculum goals? Parents are a pivotal part of our School Improvement Team program. Want to drop in on campus? Please join us! Help us in our classrooms while getting to know our scholars and school culture. Ditto help at any of our special events like our Spelling Bee, Battle of the Books, and our Julia Robinson Math Festival. We are all about engagement in our elementary school and we want you here. We also encourage you to join us for community family nights, like our time together at Detroit Pistons’ games - we love having fun with you!

Seeing caregivers play a part at our small tuition-free public school makes a deep impression on scholars. Not only that, but volunteering demonstrates your care and commitment to your child’s education. Parents are welcome here…and welcome to join in the fun that makes our engaged tuition-free elementary school so strong and connected.

Can’t Spell “Partner” without “Parent”

Looking for tips to support your PACE Academy scholar? We believe that consistent parent participation leads to student success. Here are a few ways from our Code of Conduct to help your student:

  •  Make sure that your child attends school every day, on time, and with homework completed.
  • Communicate with the school when you have a concern.
  • Read with your child, let your child see you read, and let your child read to you.
  • Monitor your child's progress in school.
  • Attend all school events, such as parent-teacher conferences, Open House and Back-to-School Night.
  • Ensure that your child gets adequate sleep, regular medical attention, and proper nutrition.

PACE Academy Warriors succeed as a team, and parents and caregivers are absolutely essential to our achievements. After all, you can’t spell “partner” without “parent”.
