Summer Orientation
As a tuition-free public K-8 charter school in Southfield, Michigan, Pace Academy is always thinking about how we can set our scholars up for success. The first day of school can be overwhelming no matter what your grade. But the first day of kindergarten? Let’s just say there are some big emotions, and not just for the students! With this in mind, we’ve developed a free summer orientation for kindergarteners that eases them into their new academic routine.
PACE Kindergarten Calendar - Dates to Know
Kindergarten Orientation Summer Camp: Half Days July 17-28, 2023 - breakfast & lunch included.
First Day of School: Tuesday, September 5, 2023.
Remember, if your child turns five before December 1, 2023, they are eligible for kindergarten this year.
Putting the FUN in Fundamentals
It can be exciting or intimidating to be in a classroom for the first time. During our kindergarten camp, we introduce classroom basics and leave plenty of time to play, make art, sing songs, read, and run around on the playground. Here are some of the skills we practice:
- following simple directions
- using our listening ears
- waiting our turn
- putting things away
While all this activity is going on, our caring and supportive teachers make assessments and plan how they can best help their new learners. We want every scholar to succeed even if they’re too young to tie their own shoes. (It will happen. Someday.)
All this fun is sure to make stomachs growl for attention so we include breakfast and lunch during this free orientation. And you can bet there will be snacks - how else can you learn subtraction?
At the end of camp, our littlest scholars are given books and a school readiness packet to take home and enjoy for the rest of the summer. They will be ready to join our close-knit school come September 5th!
Headstart on SEL
Social emotional learning (SEL) is just as important as the ABC’s and the 123’s at our engaged K-8 elementary school. Kindergarteners are introduced to key concepts like naming emotions and ways to include other students. Making friends doesn’t have to be hard– especially when you get a headstart at summer camp.
