Habit #2: Begin with the End in Mind

Your child has amazing ideas. They want to be a fighter jet pilot. No wait, a scientist who spends their days diving in the ocean. No wait! The president of the WORLD!!

No matter what their ambitions, Dr. Joseph F. Pollack Academic Center for Excellence (PACE Academy) is here to set them up for success. Using the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, we teach our K-8 scholars how to set goals and become leaders at our tuition-free school. Here, we focus on Habit #2: Begin with the End in Mind which starts with our school!

Thinking Ahead With a Mission & a Vision

Do you know how thoughtful schools and businesses begin with the end in mind? They reflect on their goals and values to develop mission and vision statements. At tuition-free PACE Academy, our mission is to empower students to realize their potential through meaningful educational opportunities and create productive citizens in an ever-changing world.

With this mission, everything else falls into place at our engaged K-8 elementary school. We provide a variety of enrichments and ways to practice what we’ve learned. We have a strings program and  STEM and art classes. We organize a math festival, spelling bee, science fair and a Battle of the Books. After school, we offer traditional sports like basketball and volleyball but also Twirling Steppers, archery, and martial arts.

And our vision? PACE envisions our school as a safe, secure and stimulating environment where children will recognize and achieve their fullest potential, so that they are empowered to make the best contribution to society. How do we do this? We partner with Leader in Me, which uses the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People principles to manifest the brilliance of each and every scholar.

Teaching Scholars How To Begin with the End in Mind

So how do we teach our scholars at our tuition-free public school to think ahead? Here are some ways we begin with the end in mind:

- creating goals and working to achieve them: these can be academic goals, like a higher reading or math level or maybe finishing in the top ten of our spelling bee. Perfect attendance is also a goal we take seriously and give recognition for because showing up matters!

- thinking about the steps it takes to complete a task: our Dance Warriors performed at a recent Black History Month assembly. They had to decide on music, outfits, and so many dance moves! In the end, it all came together so they could perform beautifully.

- providing clear expectations: knowing what is expected helps our students finish strong! Communicating expectations also helps us support one another.

- being prepared: if it’s library day, you need your books to return. If you’re digging in the garden, you need to wear clothes that are easily cleaned. And it’s always a good idea to prepare the night before school with a good night’s sleep!
